SUMMARY:On-the-Land Indigenous Education Program
DESCRIPTION:Open to TRANSFORM HF trainees\, investigators\, patients and community partners\, this unique three-day On-the-Land Indigenous Education program will enhance culturally-safe\, strengths-based and healing-informed clinical and research practices. \nDr. Angela Mashford-Pringle and Elders and Knowledge Keepers will lead TRANSFORM HF members in conversations that centre the Land-as-teacher\, Indigenous Land-based pedagogies\, and the importance of culture\, community and the Land to Indigenous ways of understanding\, relating to our environment and our health. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Format and Goals:\nIndigenous ways of knowing are grounded in a strong connection and relationship to the Land that extends deep into the past and far into the future. Based on the principle of reciprocity\, the Land is a great teacher\, providing nourishment and life to plants\, animals and humans in one relational\, interconnected cycle. “All my Relations” is often used in Indigenous communities to signify our relationships with our surroundings\, and also with one another. \nThis unique\, three-day hands-on indigenous education program led by instructors Dr. Angela Mashford-Pringle will engage TRANSFORM HF members in group and self-reflection\, learning from Elders and Knowledge Keepers about Indigenous health and Indigenous ways of knowing and hold discussions to network and reflect on building meaningful relationships with Indigenous peoples\, organizations and communities in their work in heart failure. \nOur instructors will lead us in conversations using the Land as a teacher and covering topics such as Indigenous research methods including Principles of OCAP®\, colonization and the socio-political history and current issues that Indigenous people face\, terminology\, the 3Ps (power\, privilege and positionality) as well as how to self-reflect on their learning journey with cultural safety at its core\, and finally\, they will engage with deficit-based statistics and how to uphold a strengths-based and healing-informed lens as they engage with Indigenous peoples in their future work. \nParticipants will provide a self-reflection journal after the completion of the workshop and will also be asked to complete a post-trip survey. Food is an important part in forming relationships\, as such\, participants will make meals together to build community. \nDates and Times:\nThis three-day workshop will take place Tuesday\, May 31 to Thursday\, June 2\, 2022. \nTransportation:\nParticipants are responsible for their own travel to and from Hart House Farm.
